Anzac Day March

Author: Fiona Arthurson  //  Category: Events

Today Australians have honoured the 94th Anzac Day by gathering at memorials across the country to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by more than 100,000 Australian servicemen and women.

The Sydney Morning Herald says as Australians mark the 94th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings, troops are serving in at least seven overseas operations.

The largest group is in Afghanistan, where last month the 10th Australian soldier fell, his sacrifice and those of his mates reminders of the true cost of serving our country and the true meaning of Anzac Day.

Our students joined students from a number of local schools invited by the Belmont RSL sub branch to march from the Gunyah Hotel through Belmont today. The March concluded with a service held to commemorate the Anzac spirit and pay tribute to Australia’s fallen soldiers.

Thank you to all the students and parents who attended.

Hi to all of the Marks Point people who took part in the Anzac Day march at Belmont. I went to the march at Adamstown to watch my father in law take part in the march.

He is now in his eighties and was stationed in New Guinea during the second world war, where Australian troops were trying to stop the Japanese invading Australia.

The thing which always makes me stop and think is that the soldiers who fought in these wars were all so young. Many were only nineteen and twenty..only a year or so older than all of those Year 12 kids we see driving in their P plates.

Who can find a song by Eric Bogle, called “The Green Fileds of France’ .. It has some very sad lyrics..or, Redgum singing ‘I was only Nineteen’..or the more recent version of this by the Hilltop Hoods.. makes us stop and think.

Could you post what Anzac day is and a little about Gallipoli? Our sixth grade students are studying World War II and (of course) our information is mostly about the US in the war. I think the students need to understand other countries contributions.
